"“Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Luke 23:34, NIV)
As Jesus hung on the cross, in excruciating pain and agony, His first words were not of anger or condemnation, but of forgiveness. He asked the Father to forgive those who were responsible for His crucifixion, including the soldiers, religious lead- ers, and all who mocked Him. Despite the injustice He endured, Jesus chose to for- give. This act of incredible grace and mercy is a profound example of how we, too, are called to forgive, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Forgiveness is not always easy, but Jesus showed us that it is a choice, a com- mand, and a reflection of God’s love. When we forgive, we release others from the burden of their actions, and in doing so, we are also freed from the weight of bitter- ness and anger. Forgiveness is a crucial part of the Lenten journey, as it brings healing to our hearts and restores relationships.
Challenge: Who do you need to forgive today? Is there someone you’re holding resentment toward that God is calling you to release?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the forgiveness You offered on the cross. Help me to
forgive those who have wronged me, just as You forgave me. Amen."
