“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:24–25, NIV)
In these verses, Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, a call that challenges us to surrender our desires, ambitions, and comforts. The world tells us to seek self-fulfillment, but Jesus teaches that true fulfillment comes through giving up our own will to follow His. Denying ourselves means putting His purposes above our own, even when it’s difficult or uncomfortable.
Lent is a time to examine the things that often take precedence over our relationship with Jesus. It’s easy to be distracted by worldly desires, but the call of discipleship is a call to greater sacrifice and trust. When we deny ourselves and follow Jesus, we find a deeper, more meaningful life—one that is rooted in His love and purpose.
Challenge: What desires or distractions keep you from following Him fully? How can you lay them down during this season of Lent?
Prayer: Lord, help me to deny myself and take up my cross daily. Show me the distractions that hinder my walk with You, and give me the strength to follow You wholeheartedly. Amen.
